Single-Phase vs Three-Phase Energy Meter: How to Choose

Choosing between a single-phase and a three-phase energy meter is one of the first decisions every buyer faces. The wrong choice means inaccurate billing, extra wiring costs, or a meter that cannot handle the load. This guide explains the difference in plain terms and shows you how to pick the right type for each project.

What Is a Single-Phase Energy Meter?

A single-phase meter measures electricity on one live wire and one neutral wire. It is the standard choice for homes, small shops and apartments where the load is usually below 10 kW.

Our single-phase range covers three types: standard electronic meters for ordinary billing, IC card prepaid meters where the customer pays before use, and Bluetooth smart prepaid meters where the customer tops up from a mobile app.

What Is a Three-Phase Energy Meter?

A three-phase meter measures three live wires (plus neutral in a four-wire system). It is used wherever the load is large or where motors and heavy equipment run: factories, workshops, commercial buildings and utility distribution.

Our three-phase range covers direct-connected meters, transformer-operated meters for large loads, multi-tariff meters with separate peak / flat / valley registers, DIN-rail 4P meters with Modbus-RTU or DL/T645-2007 communication, and high-power versions up to 250A. Prepaid versions are available with IC card or 4G remote top-up.

The Practical Differences

  • Wiring: single-phase needs two wires, three-phase needs three or four.
  • Load capacity: single-phase is normally enough up to about 10 kW; above that, three-phase is the safer choice.
  • Motors and heavy equipment: three-phase is required for most industrial motors.
  • Cost: a single-phase meter costs less, but installing three-phase wiring later is expensive — so size the meter for the load you expect in two or three years, not only today.
  • Billing features: multi-tariff (peak / flat / valley) and remote reading are more common in three-phase ranges.

How to Choose in Four Questions

  1. What is the maximum load? Below 10 kW, single-phase is usually fine. Above 10 kW, or if a motor is involved, go three-phase.
  2. What does the utility require? Many utilities specify the meter type, accuracy class and communication protocol. Check this before ordering.
  3. Do you need prepaid billing? If tenants pay in advance, choose a prepaid type — IC card where there is no network, smart or 4G where there is.
  4. Will you read the meter remotely? If yes, choose a version with RS485 / Modbus-RTU or DL/T645-2007, and confirm the protocol with your software supplier.

Electronic, Mechanical or Prepaid?

Electronic meters are the mainstream choice: accurate, stable, and available with communication. Mechanical (induction) meters are still widely used in residential projects where simplicity and low cost matter most — there is no power supply, no firmware and no battery to fail. Prepaid meters solve the collection problem: the customer tops up first, so there is no unpaid bill to chase.

Why Buy Direct from the Factory

Ruizhi Factory (ELEWISE) has been producing energy meters for 28 years in Liushi, Yueqing, Wenzhou — China’s electrical capital. We manufacture every meter in our own 6,350 m² workshop, our workers check each unit carefully, and every meter is strictly tested before it leaves the factory. Because we are the factory — not a trading company — we can keep prices low and still support small and trial orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a three-phase meter for a single-phase load?
Technically a three-phase four-wire meter can measure a single-phase load, but it costs more and complicates wiring. Use a single-phase meter unless the site is likely to be upgraded.

What accuracy class should I order?
Class 1.0 is the common choice for residential and commercial billing. Class 0.5S is used where higher precision is required, for example in DIN-rail and transformer-operated meters for industrial metering.
